1 – Manuela and Bolivar, wonderful love stories we will never forget
Manuelita Sáenz was a woman who had everything she could dream of. She came from a wealthy family and had married a British man who adored her. She was young, beautiful and one of the most respected people in all of Quito.
The same day the province gained its independence, Manuela’s life changed forever. She dressed and dressed for the evening and went to a ball. Here she met the man she would love to take her last breath: Simon Bolivar.
Manuela left her husband, her land and her wealth to follow “El Libertador” (The Liberator). He also fell in love with her. He called her “My kind maniac.” She followed him in the barricades and fought with the Creole army, where she achieved the rank of captain.
What still made this couple one of history’s most amazing love stories was her courageous actions in the so-called September conspiracy in 1828. Bolivar’s enemies tried to kill him. Manuela, with the sword in her hand, confronted them. This gave Bolivar enough time to escape. Manuela will always be remembered as “La Libertadora del Libertador” or “The Liberator’s Liberator”.
2 – Abelard and Heloise
Abelard and Heloise was another example of one of history’s most amazing love stories. Peter Abelard was one of the wisest men of his time. He was a philosopher and theologian, but that is not what makes him famous today.
What made him famous was his turbulent relationship with Heloise. Heloise was considered one of the most enlightened women of her time. She was his student when she was barely 16 years old.
They fell head over heels in love and she became pregnant, which was quite unusual and was overlooked at the time. Abelard kidnapped her and took her to her sister’s house. There “Astrolabe” was born and left to her relatives, who were to take care of the child.
Later, they fled to get married, so as not to ruin Abelard’s career. Heloise’s uncle and teacher reprimanded her for not publicly accepting the marriage. He even went so far as to physically beat her.
Abelard brought Heloise to a convent to protect her from her uncle. The furious uncle responded by castrating Abelard. The two lovers never saw each other again. However, they never lost touch – thanks to the tender love letters to each other. These letters are some of the best French literature in history. Later, in the 19th century, lovers were reunited in a divided tomb in Paris.
3 – Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson
The love of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson was unforgettable. Their relationship became known worldwide because he renounced being King of England to marry her. It was very controversial. Many saw it as one of the most romantic gestures of the 20th century. Others considered it a disaster.
The English people never forgave him for making such a decision. Historical and wonderful love stories sometimes crash with more practical conditions, such as power. It was 1936 and Europe was on the brink of war. Edward VIII had a reputation for being moody and a weak character. Churchill even said that Britain should thank Wallis Simpson for liberating the country from the terrible king he would have been.
The truth is that Edward, heir to the throne, was hopelessly in love with Wallis and gave up everything to be with her. What happened next was shocking. The couple lived a completely superficial life.
