How can we define what a leader is? Is there a person in charge of a company or someone who makes all the decisions in a group ? Are there a number of qualities that a person needs to have to be a leader?

From a work and organizational point of view, there are several personal and behavioral characteristics related to the position a person has in a company. These make it easier to identify a leader. Yet it is a question that many ask themselves: is being a leader something innate or is it something achievable?

If we see leadership as something that is characterized by personal qualities, we will come to the conclusion that being a leader is something innate. A born leader is a person who can guide a group of people and one who likes to organize things. In addition, they know how to solve any problem that arises.

Now, if we see leadership as something that depends on the position the person holds in a company or in a group, we will come to the conclusion that being a leader is not innate. A “made” leader is shaped over time by his experiences, such as the positions they have held, their relationship with other workers and the way they lead a group. In this case, the determinant characteristics would not be related to their personality.

On the other hand, when we attach leadership to a person’s behavior, we should be aware of the things they do. Does that person’s behavior lead to the company’s productivity or rather to social conditions in the workplace? Depending on the leader’s behavior, we could identify leadership according to the needs they focus on.

In addition to everything we have already said, being a leader is also about charisma and inspiring others to achieve great things, such as a role model. Basically, being responsible does not necessarily mean that you are a leader. Although there are personality traits that can simplify leadership, we must remember that leading is a two-way concept that refers to both the influencer and those who are influenced.

To lead, the person must be able to deal with people in an independent way. They must be empathetic, know how to communicate with others and be motivated and hardworking. Basically, they must have all the good qualities people look for in a professional. They need to know how to work in a group, have the creativity to solve problems and clarify the organization’s goals to pursue them properly.

A person may be born with certain skills to lead others. But if they want to lead in an appropriate way, there are two things they need to do. First of all, they need to perfect the skills they already have. Secondly, they must develop new ones.

In addition, we must not forget that leadership requires that we create and maintain a good environment. This is something that both the leader and the followers do. We must remember that we are all free to choose who we want as a leader. Therefore, leadership should not be overlooked, but earned every day.

Being a leader requires much more than just exercising power

As you can see, being a leader requires much more than the ability to show and lead. Leadership influences others, makes them do what is suggested and keeps them motivated to do so. A leader is someone who can make others work comfortably and efficiently.

A leader is one who recognizes the values ​​and skills of others and encourages them to keep moving forward. They know the team very well and are aware of their strengths and skills. A good leader does not bring his team down. They are inspiring and helpful and always make sure that the team uses its strengths to the fullest.

Therefore, being a leader is not easy. Leadership is not meant for everyone. Those who have a leading spirit are able to do good things. They know exactly when and how to take risks to get the best possible result. Leadership is about keeping an open mind, flexibility and responsibility. Leaders need to keep in mind that those below them are a big part of the equation.
